Oyster=Big Brother ?? by Tony Bryer
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/3121652.stm Quote: Civil rights campaigners have expressed concerns about the new smart travelcards introduced for London commuters. Under the new system, Transport for London will be able to track a commuter's movements and it plans to retain information on journeys made for "a number of years"

207 / 427 by M J Forbes
It seems that the contract for the 207 has been re-awarded to First London, and there are a few changes afoot. The route is to be split, with the "207" becoming Shepherd's Bush - Hayes Bypass only, and an new route "427" taking over the Acton - Uxbridge section. The 207 has a PVR for 25 bendybuses (presumably the trial in 2001 was succesful!), and the new 427 will have a new fleet of low-floor...

Query on new SWR timetable by Michael R N Dolbear
Gazing thoughtfully at 2 tph off peak, just like the days when I was at school :- I notice that the last stopping service of the day, the 00:09 Waterloo to Guildford via Woking is "stops to set down only" after Surbiton. Can anyone explain the advantage of this ? I also note that "existing Staines to Weybridge service is withdrawn" is timetable-speak for 2 tph rather than 1 tph off-peak, that...

Anyone else notice the north London traffic has suddenly become the same as before the congestion charge was introduced? So has Ken reversed the traffic light settings to start his new £10 charge scheme? daveF

Visiting London & Newcastle: any suggested stations by george lewycky
I just want to thank everyone for their generosity and information to prepare me for my visit England. Someone asked what I do for NY Transit. I support their financial systems primarily Accounts Receivable and Budget. Since I started working here and travelling Singapore, Stockholm and Holland I have been enjoying their trains & subways/underground/tubes and now since I'm seeing the...

Crossrail and Maryland by Jonn Elledge
Hi all, Does anyone know why Maryland has not been included in the proposals for Crossrail line 1? It appears on none of the route maps, yet its closure isn't discussed anywhere on the Crossrail homepage; I can't really see the station staying open if the line goes ahead, because all stopping services on the Shenfield line will be diverted into the new tunnel, and short of diverting some C2C...

M4/A4 Chiswick some time last week by AstraVanMan
I forget exactly what day it was, but in the afternoon rush hour there was massive jams on the M4 heading into London, which I got stuck in. Somewhere between J3 and J2 I heard on the traffic news that the Eastbound A4 was closed at Sutton Court Road, so I came off onto the A205, around to the A316, back in on that, over the flyover at the Hogarth roundabout, and then it was fine all the way...

Oystercard and one day travelcards by Robin May
I got my oystercard in the post the other day, and I'll have to travel in to zone 1 tonight but the monthly ticket that's loaded on to the oyster doesn't start until the 30th. Is it possible at this time to load day travelcards and other tickets on to oysters, or will I have to wait for that option and use a normal paper ticket tonight? -- message by Robin May, consumer of liquids "A very...

Oyster Card - charge? by amd
Hi, I've looked over the groups and the Oyster website and cannot find the answer to my question: Is there a charge to own an Oyster card in the first place or do you just pay the cost of the season/monthly/7-day travelcard and get the card for free? I've been told that there is a charge for the card itself, with the actual cost of transport to be paid on top.

"le crossing" A question by Fat Richard
I have recently become a user of the the Dartford Crossing, something I need to do every week or so. Coming back South last night with the family on board we suddenly realised we had made no provision for the £1 toll. Having slowed to a crawl we eventually scraped together enough pennies and 5p's from the kids pockets to pay. Does anyone know what proedure the staff adopt when faced with...
