Oystercard-style test in Orlando by
Fustanella
Looks like your idea is catching on over here. Central Florida transit folk
are testing an RFID smartcard starting next week for a year, with a couple
of bus lines, parking garages and tollbooths taking part.
http://www.centstobits.com for the particulars. I'm going to a meeting next
Tuesday to learn more about it as a tester and all-around transportation
guy.

Radio on the Tube by
The Equalizer
"Salvation is at hand for Tube commuters bored by the small print on
carriage advertisements and being stuck in tunnels. London Underground is in
talks with cable company NTL about installing a digital radio network on the
Tube. Passengers with portable radios will be able to tune in to a range of
radio stations, and NTL is also considering using the signal to send video
data to handheld...

Although none of this should be a revelation to uk.r. or TL travellers.
Most of those dates and times were in the May 2003 eidtion of the TL
pocket t.t. and IIRC were in the previous Sept 2002 copy too, but in
less detail. I put some of the dates on uk.r about this time last year.

Those round yellow disks? by
Ken
I've noticed on some of the more modern buses that there is a yellow disk by
the ticket machine and that some oaps appear to scan their bus passes on it
instead of showing the driver.
What is the purpose of these and can I scan my travelcard?
I've also noticed them on tramlink stations.

oyster record card by
Rob
Hello - I've just renewed (I think) my Oyster card for the first time by
swiping it at my designated top up station, but I was wondering what the
situation with the "Record Card" is since it's now out of date?
When I've tried to buy a zone extension at a BR ticket office they seem to
want to see the Record Card (presumably to check I have the other zones) -
is the zone information on the record...

OK, so my my shiny new oyster expires at 0400 so I've just logged on

would have thought a username lookup from oystercard number would be
useful

Snow-machines proposed to cool Tube by
Fustanella
http://tinyurl.com/kgpp
An Israeli company has proposed cooling down sweltering London Underground
platforms by placing snow-making machines above ground.
IDE Technologies Ltd, which develops desalination plants, said on Monday it
had submitted the plan as part of a contest announced by London Mayor Ken
Livingstone last month inviting proposals to help commuters beat the heat.

Shielding 750 volt 3rd rail ? by
Michael Bell
It has always seemed to me that the 750 volt 3rd rail is a bad
idea. Rather it is the idea that somebody (Sprague?) first thought of
and it got made permanent. Its drawbacks in its present form seem to
me to be :-
* The possibility of electrocuting somebody. Are there many
casualties? More difficult to answer; how much do the procedures to
avoid electrocution cost in direct and indirect...

I wonder if any Londoners here could click on the following web hyperlinks, in

I know it's a bit off topic, but do any other cities (other than London)

Glasgow does, and Newcastle has a light-rail system called the "Metro", part

Oyster Card - how's it work? by
Nes
Hey all,
I was wondering whether to get an Annual Bus Pass usnig an Oyster Card... it
all looks good, but the web site doesn't answer some of my queries and,
rather than waiting a long time for them to respond, I thought I'd ask the
experts first!
So, you get the Oyster Card. Do you use your existing photo card with it, or
do you have to get a new one?

Website helping Tourists. by
CJG
LU's website is apparently helping tourists to plan their travels round
London and encouraging tourists to come to London. Which is great for
the economy.
But if you look at their promotional material to advertise this fact.
Your notice that one of the screen shots they have chosen to promote LU
is news on the Underground. And you can quite clearly see a story about
a serious sexual assault...

I,ve just noticed that all of the Jam Cams, provided by BBC London,
covering my area of east London - the Isle of Dogs and Blackwall

fault'. Most of these cams have been kaputt for years but you would
get the occasional day when you could check the tunnel...

Disabled parking by

Does anyone know if there's a consistent law across all boroughs for
disabled spaces in residential roads? I've noticed in Sutton for example
they have a sign indicating clearly that they are for the use of any orange
badge holder.
Nearer home in Wandsworth and Lambeth I noticed a more proprietorial
attitude, spaces are created and used exclusively by the disabled homeowner.
Ultimately the...
