Default SWT Vs Southern ticket machines..

There's some weird and very annoying policy that if you're travelling
only a short distance, you can't buy a return ticket.

You can, but only a *day* return. Can't buy a return ticket to come
back a few days later. This makes a certain amount of sense within a
small area, but first of all the distance is silly, something like 50
miles, and second there should be exceptions for ports and airports,
which there aren't. Apparently if you get a train to Gatwick the train
company can't imagine that you might actually be travelling to Stockholm
for the weekend and not just be a friend-less plane-nerd.

you *can* get period returns to gatwick, stansted and luton, from
London Terminals at least: i've used all of the above.
