Why exactly are they being taken all the way to Grimsby to be
demolished? Wouldn't it be more effective to do it down here?

Asbestos.

Somehow I doubt anything containing asbestos would be shredded by a
demolition crane as that coach was. Meyer Newman used to put such
vehicles through a firing tunnel which inflicted such a conflagration
that the main frames would sag, not sure what other scrapyards did but
to get rid of asbestos is serious work.

A lot of the SR EMU's are being stored in Shoeberryness MOD site by serco.
They have set up an asbestos removal building. When they are finished with
it it gets takes to a scrapyard by road and then broken up. I have been to
the site a couple of times regarding my groups 308 vehicle.

Down where? You're "In The North" remember. Which particular train
demolition yard in London did you have in mind?

What scrapyards still scrap trains?

I know of Immingham, and Simms.

Is Booth Roe Rotherham still going or Glasgow MC?

AFAIK MC at Glasgow is now a branch of Tesco. Again AFAIK, the breakers
closed due to the infamous 1000+ day lack of orders for new trains and
resultant lack of Mk1s being withdrawn.

Booths at Rotherham is still a going concern, but didn't the last
batch of 101s for scrap go to somewhere in South Wales from Longsight
last week?
