Broken Down Train - Major Rail Disruption on Brighton Line

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standa...-disruption.do

Thousands of mainline rail commuters suffered major disruption today
after a broken down train blocked busy routes into London.

It broke down between Haywards Heath and Gatwick Aiport causing long
delays for First Capital Connect, Southern and Gatwick Express
services throughout the morning peak.

Trains stacked up behind one another with others diverted adding an
hour and a half to many journeys.

Brighton to Gatwick Aiport trains were diverted via Lewes. Replacement
buses operated between Brighton and Haywards Heath.

The empty Southern Railways service heading towards London broke down
just before Gatwick Airport around 6 am.

This halted north bound services out of Brighton including packed
trains to Victoria. The stricken train was cleared around 8 am but
there were huge knock-on delays.

It's getting worse for the evening peak.

A few errors here I think. What is the point in diverting via Lewes if the
broken train is between Haywards Heath and Gatwick? I'm also doubtful that
an empty train would be heading into London at that time of day. There are
some empty workings heading south to run peak trains into London.

How can an electric train consisting of 2 seperate units completely break
down? Surely even if one unit is declared dead the other would be able
to push/pull?

Numerous scenarios so many I'm not going to start listing them.

Apart from that, do you know it was definitely 2x442 and not a solo
442 ?

It was 2412 solo that failed.

I had the pleasure of a NoL-Eurostar failing last week. Failing so
completely that none of the motor cars was operative anymore - and in
consequence not even loudspeakers anymore. 2 km outside Valenciennes
station.

Solution applied: send out a Z23500 (2-car EMU:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SNCF_Class_Z_23500 ) as tractor unit, to
drag the errant Eurostar back into the station.

Cheers,

Johannes

Hmm, do these use the same electrical arrangement as the Three Capitals
sets, which we were assured were designed to be proof against a complete
traction failure (unless in exceptionally severe winter weather, of
course) ?
