Default A4 Hammersmith Flyover closed due to 'serious structural defect'

A flyover which forms part of a key route out of west London has been
shut due to a serious structural defect.

Transport for London (TfL) said the Hammersmith flyover, which carries
traffic from the M4 and A4, would be shut until at least early
January.

It was closed after engineers checking internal cables which help to
hold the concrete structure in place noticed urgent repair work was
needed.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the area and diversions are in place.

TfL said it was "urgently" examining local roadworks to see if they
could be suspended to help minimise traffic disruption.

It said engineers and contractors, along with external experts in
structural engineering, would be "working around the clock" over the
Christmas and new year period to complete the assessment and decide
what action needed to be taken.

Garrett Emmerson, TfL's chief operating officer for surface transport,
said: "We are very sorry for the disruption this will cause drivers
and we are doing everything we can to minimise traffic disruption."

He added: "In the meantime, drivers are strongly advised to avoid the
area if they can or allow more time for their journeys."

And only a week ago TfL said "the flyover remains open and safe to use".
That was in response to a whistle-blower who contacted the Fulham and
Hammersmith Chronicle to say "It’s not a question of whether the
structure will collapse, it’s a matter of when":

Could be amusing if it does need replacing. Massive distruption to a
wide area for what?... years?. Plus the cost of course, how much for a
new flyover? £1 billion? Where's that coming from?

If it's put out to tender properly instead of being reserved for favoured contractors, it won't cost anything like that.

Some relief from 'Jammersmith' - one lane each way on the flyover is
due to reopen to light traffic (so no HGVs or coaches) today, Friday
13th. Work to replace the damaged cables will continue for the next 4
months.
