Default Watford to Hemel Hempstead for 9am start- M1 or backroads?

Hi guys and girls,

As per the title really, Im starting a new job in Hemel and travelling from Watford. Driving, and trying to find the least painful morning route.

Will be going from WD17 to HP1, so central Watford to central Hemel.

Google maps reckons either M1 or A41 (plus some backroads). A paltry 17/ 19 minutes either way on a Sunday evening, presumably significantly longer on a weekday morning.

What are you guys thoughts on this, and feel free to guesstimate the average journey time leaving shortly after 8 o'clock if your a grizzled, embittered commuter with many years experience!

Regards,

David

Presumably? Why not ask Google? You can set any date in the future and an arrival or a departure time. It will give you a range from X to Y minutes, where X is usually the no-traffic time and Y is a reasonable worst estimate. (That's worst in a typical month, not worst ever.)

At that time of the morning, you're going to get snarled up in
central Hemel Hempstead to at least some extent. The two
biggest variables in your equation 1) are how quickly can you
get from your house to either the M1 or the A41 and 2) how long
from either route before you hit the morning rush hour tailback.

Good luck either way. I don't work any more so I don't have these
problems. Mind you, tomorrow a friend and I are going to Wells,
Castle Combe and Cricklade and I have to work out the best route
there and back via Dulwich!

Excuse me asking, is that on Google Maps as I can't see any option for putting in day or time.

Get directions for the journey you want.
Click "Leave now".
Select "Depart at" or "Arrive by"
Set the time and date you want

When you've set up the start and end points of the journey on Google Maps, it will say "Leave now" followed by an arrowhead. If you click the arrowhead, it will offer options of "Depart at" or "Leave by". Click one of those and it will then allow you to set the time and date.

Do you really have to drive? It's 7-10 mins on the train. OK, so Hemel
station isn't exactly central, but even adding 20 mins walk it's still
competitive.

I used to cycle WD24 to Buncefield (so just by the M1 junction) and it
used to take 24 minutes consistently (door to desk - I would change
clothes after about 30 minutes cooldown but not shower)

Driving motorway was *usually* a couple of minute quicker but could
easily be 10+ minutes slower.

The almost 8 miles each way bike ride was probably the best part of that job.
It was really hard getting started on that commute but great once I've
been doing it for a month or so. So much so that I scrapped my car and
cycled in all weather (even bought a trike for the snowy/icy days)

Tim.
