Default The Met to Watford Junction: Deadline Day

An interesting article on the tangled history of this absurdly expensive
project whose time has come, and probably gone, as its parliamentary
approval is about to lapse, with no sign of the funding gap being filled:

AIUI if work has started before PP etc. expires then it can continue.


If you read the report to it's conclusion you will see that the law for
these works is different to PP.

Still it is not looking good for this project. Taking the Met. Into
Watford Junction would provide a very useful interchange. Diverting
the Overground to Rickmansworth would be an interesting option.

For very few people. After all, the Harrow area and the Wembley area
already have services to Watford Junction.

The only point I can see in a Croxley Link would be a diesel version to
allow the entire Chiltern Amersham service to be diverted to Euston, so
that the Chiltern mainline could run more trains into Marylebone. But a
curve from Northwick Park to the "slow" OLE lines at South Kenton would
probably do a similar job much more cheaply.

Just worth adding that at an Assembly Meeting last week the Commissioner confirmed that the project has not quite died yet. Apparently some of the funding partners (not TfL) are seeking Housing Infrastructure Fund monies to try to fill the funding gap. No word on when the decision is expected but clearly someone is trying to find some extra money in light of the Mayor's refusal to fill the gap.

Whether the Treasury is still supporting the project remains to be seen given there cannot be a business case that properly justifies the project cost of nigh on £350m. If the funding issue is fixed *and* it is given the go ahead then it confirms the govt's willingness to pour a huge sum of cash into a rather marginal constituency.

Well, Northwick Park is well placed for a new curve to be built, and
perhaps some of the large back gardens of the houses on Windermere Avenue
could be borrowed during the construction. I've no idea how good the B/C
ratio would be, but it's probably doable at reasonable cost.
