Would not be surprised if land pressures over the next Century will see a
lot more trackage built over on the routes into London , that is if the
replacement of Diesel powered trains is achieved .
Rafting over Clapham Junction and all the way into Waterloo would give
space for lots of basic housing .
Generations such as myself may decry the loss of view but really there
isn’t that much to see once you get within about 5 -10 miles of the termini
except for modern buildings and graffitied railway infrastructure and heck
a lot of younger passengers will be looking at a screen of a mobile device
either for work or entertainment.
Waterloo until recent times had a pleasant approach as the Thames and
Parliament opened up left side as you approached , now almost totally
obscured by tall buildings.
Need not be confined to Railways , if electric road vehicles do reach the
stage of being almost the only things on the road then rafting over roads
as well will also release a lot of space you could build housing on.
Autonomous vehicles if they come about could aid this as they would suffer
the disorienting effect that some humans get from driving in long tunnels
,like rail passengers their occupants will be occupied by looking at a
screen of some sort.
