Underground Drivers Reading Newpapers

Seen on the Bakerloo Line last Sunday afternoon - train pulled into
Charing Cross northbound platform, side door of driver's cab was open
- it was a little hot underground - and he had an open newspaper
propped up in front of him. I was waiting on the platform about
halfway along, and as he passed me by he was applying the brake and
quite obviously reading the paper at the same time. It looked like a
tabloid that used large fonts - perhaps the People, News of the World,
Mirror or Sun. He was aged about 45-50, had a moustache and craggy
face. He wore an open neck shirt. No cap. The ride to Paddington was a
little jerky - so I guess that he was concentrating more on the news
(such as it is in those rags) than on the driving.

Have you reported this to LU? If this is the only place you've raised the
matter, I'm sorry to say it will do no good.

For your future reference should you see a similar event; on each end of the
train adjacent to the cab windows is a reporting number of up to 3 digits.
The actual number and position will vary according to the line and the type
of train.

Make a note number of this with time and location and report it to LU.
