I guess I'm too naive to expect better but riddle me this:-

I live near Bookham. Which gives me the choice of Bookham (SWT) or
Leatherhead (Southern). It depends what time of day and where I am which
I use.

How come then that the ticket machines are so different..

Bookham to Richmond - Not Via London, £11.10
Leatherhead to Richmond - Not Via London £11.10

Thats great.

Bookham to Farringdon - Not Via Tube - Not available from the SWT
machine, Farringdon not listed (Ticket guy eventually sold me Bookham to
Farringdon via 'any permitted' for 14.70

Leatherhead to Farringdon - Not Via Tube - £12.70 from the ticket machine.

And secondly how come SWT machines wont sell me a ticket for tomorrow
and Southern will. Heck the Southern will even sell me a Return to
Inverness whereas the SWT machines seem to have had a station lobotomy.

Was my Bookham fare right? If so I'll be going from Leatherhead in
future....

Is there a place where can I find out detailed fare calculation
information from station to station?

Going off of Avantix from the *last* NFM, before last week's fare
updates (so might be incorrect!), there is only an Any Permitted route
BKA-ZFD.

There's some weird and very annoying policy that if you're travelling
only a short distance, you can't buy a return ticket. I had to go to
Guildford on Monday and return on Tuesday. "No return mate, got to be
two singles". Hence had to queue up twice. Nice way to make a
railway more useable. Don't know what the reason for this policy is.

The reason is to stop people using the same ticket more
than once. On a short journey, it is less likely to get clipped
than a long journey and if its validity was several days it could
be used two or three times.

There is however no need to queue up twice. There is no
reason (apart from laziness by the seller) stopping you buying
the return ticket dated for "tomorrow".

You can, but only a *day* return. Can't buy a return ticket to come
back a few days later. This makes a certain amount of sense within a

you *can* get period returns to gatwick, stansted and luton, from
London Terminals at least: i've used all of the above.

You can get an Open Return from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester
Airport (currently £6.80 SOR, £9.60 FOR), a distance of just under 10 miles!

Thornton Heath to Stansted Airport: open tickets (including Saver) only.
