Default Route 395 returns?

Whilst waiting for a train at Mudchute DLR, I looked at the map of local
transport links, dated March 2007.

Bus route 395 (Limehouse - Rotherhithe Tunnel - Surrey Quays etc) was shown.
This route was withdrawn in (from memory) 2005 or early 2006.

Have DLR simply been tardy in updating their map, or is the 395 returning -
perhaps when the ELL closes later this year? The 'closed' bus stops in
Branch Road (Limehouse) do not show any publicity indicating the route is
returning.

I'm 99% sure the DLR have been tardy with updating their map. They
certainly don't have up to date street maps at stations. From what I
gather there won't be a replacement bus through the Rotherhithe Tunnel
when the ELL closes either.

There are however proposals for a new bus route 135 from the Isle of
Dogs to Old Street station via Canary Wharf, Limehouse, Aldgate and
Liverpool Street. It's planned to start early next year. The 330 bus
will also be extended to Canary Wharf. Other than some frequency
improvements to the D3 I'm not aware of any other bus route changes
planned in the area. Anybody else know any more such as what route the
135 will take on the Isle of Dogs?

The (excellent) londonbusroutes.net suggests there will be three
additional replacement bus services for the ELL (in addition to the
existing one to Shoreditch):

Route ELC : New Cross Gate - New Cross - Surrey Quays - Canada Water,
every 5 - 10 minutes, to be operated by Travel London (part of National
Express Group) with a fleet of 12 double deckers.

Route ELR : Canada Water - Rotherhithe every 15 minutes, to be operated
by Travel London with 1 double decker.

Route ELW : Wapping - Shadwell - Whitechapel every 10 - 15 minutes, to
be operated by First London with a fleet of 4 double deckers.

Cheers,

Barry

Due to a width restriction in the Rotherhithe Tunnel, only certain small
minibuses can fit through (along the lines of the Mercedes vehicles used
on the old 395). LU did look at running a service through the tunnel
when the East London line closes to meet local demand between Wapping
and Canada Water etc, but found that any such service would be
overwhelmed by those making longer journeys. To meet this extra demand,
there would have to be a 12 seater minibus through the tunnel every 30
seconds, which simply would not be practical. In any case, for the
majority of longer cross-river journeys, it takes around the same time
to go via Canary Wharf as it would to run a bus through the (busy) tunnel.

Cheers

Agree with what Steve says.
A few months ago a couple of officials came to the local community
council, and said substantially the same thing.

My suggestion would be to open the pedestrian entrances to the
Rotherhithe Tunnel - in Rotherhithe and in King George IV Park.
But I don't see that happening.

Why not revert Brunel's Thames Tunnel to pedestrian use, its only a few
years since the last major overhaul, they could do the track through it one
side at a time...
