In brief: a bridge carrying a (swollen) river under the railway
has collapsed. This could be one of two bridges - a modern (ish)
structure near the Jubilee Mail Centre, or the rather more
substantial tunnel further west - a lot older. Both of these
structures are carring swollen rivers under the railway.
The tunnel, known as the Cavalry Tunnel or the 40-Acre Tunnel,
used to provide a pedestrian route across Hounslow Heath under
the extensive [former] marshalling yards (which may be
re-utilised as part of the Aitrack scheme). It's a substantial
brick-lined tunnel, about 250 yards long. Given that it's
predicted it could take up to four weeks to repair the failed
bridge, I suspect it's the tunnel which has collapsed.
