I wonder why TfL don't speed up the escalators a bit when the demand is
high?

They are already quite fast, compared to many countries. The slowest
escalators I recall are those at Seoul (Incheon) Airport, which has an
underground shuttle train to reach many of the gates - with two long
stages of escalator to reach the stations each end. If they went any
slower they'd be going backwards! It's a shame because the rest of the
airport is excellent.

According to the paper I quoted the other day LUL escalators move generally
at 43.2 m/min. I can't find a Moscow figure but speeds up to 60 m/min are
considered acceptable for public use, it appears.
