You'd hope that even if staff hadn't seen one before, they'd be able

to use a little bit of common sense, even if the gates aren't
intelligent enough to pass them.

Way back my local SWT ticket office said "sometimes they don't work"
when I bought a foward dated one.

but what goes on the mag stripe when you buy a Saver Return+U12, ie is
a date range allowable ?

Try a formal complaint to the TOC that issued the ticket.
