Default Oyster cards - free journeys?

On central London buses with a separate conductor, I notice that my
OysterCard is visually checked, but that's it. I could only have a
PrePay, and be getting my journey free.

On NR journeys from Kings Cross north via Finsbury Park, again, I've
only seen visual checking of OysterCards.

It would seem to me that there could be an awful lot of opprtunities for
fraud...

Likewise on the DLR. There's only 2 or 3 gated stations on that whole
network (Bank, Canning Town and Stratford) and Oyster cards are still
only visually checked. It's annoying for me because I *have* only got
Pre-Pay but I'm being good (at the moment) and validating my card at the
start and end of each journey. I could save myself a hell of a lot of
money by not doing that as they don't have any way checking my card
properly.

Anyone got an update on when the portable validators for checking these
cards will be giving to the train captains, conductors etc?
