Default Snow and Ice

When it is predicted that there will be a problem with snow and ice then
trains will be run all night to keep the points working. However this is a
conflict of interest as engineering work can not go ahead. A decision will
be made which is more important.

I can not comment on the specific problems today. The real trouble comes
from the changing temperature. The snow fall itself is not a problem but if
this melts it washes away the de-icing measures. This may be then followed
by a cold snap which freezes up the melting snow.

In the past this has happened to the approach to High Barnet. The train got
stuck and so went backwards to Totteridge and then the driver took a run up
to the affected area and luckily made it. If the same situation was to
happen in a siding then this option is not available.
