Much though I enjoy going there on holiday, a water taxi from Marco
Polo airport into the centre of Venice is now an eye-watering 100
pounds.

As in London, there are much cheaper (albeit slower) alternatives.

Slower than a water taxi?

Very much so. As Roland says, the water taxis are effectively speed
boats on the open lagoon. At quiet times they can reach San Marco in 15
minutes from the airport, compared with 70 minutes for the water bus.
There is a direct land bus from the airport, but it only goes to the end
of the causeway, so a transfer to water bus or water taxi is needed to
reach most parts of the city.

They keep talking about an underground railway beneath the lagoon, but I
doubt that I'll ever live to see it!
