They weren't canaries - they were dogs.

Insula Canaria = Isle of Dogs, which was the Latin name for the Canary
Islands (although the dogs were apparently seals - sea dogs in Latin).

Olsen Lines rather liked the idea of shipping fruit from one of Isle of
Dogs to another, hence the punning title of Canary Wharf.
