While doing this, you would have to be careful not to jangle the other
coins in your pocket.
Alternatively use a wallet with a tight coin compartment or a separate
coin holder.

That you have obviously thought about this worries me a little. ;-)

No it's because I have a separate coin holder myself and it easily springs
to mind.

A separate coin holder? Serious stuff. ;-)

LOL. No originally I used a wallet as described above but over time the coin
compartment has become so worn it has holes in it. As the rest of the wallet
has a perfect set of compartments I decided to just get a separate little
purse for coins.

Hmm. Wallets and coins don't really mix. I think the sharper edges
of the new steel coins will only make the situation worse.

I was imagining one of those metal coin holders that takes a stack of
£1 coins and has a spring inside. Something that is *engineered*.
That's what I meant by "serious stuff". ;-)

Having had a wallet that took various demonations of Euro coins in
separate "holes" I was trying find one that held UK coins but hadn't
found one. meanwhile the missus got me one of these.

Been an absolute boon especially when my job entailed paying for
parking at various locations through the day.
A tad heavy for a trouser pocket but OK in the coat. Gets a lot of
remarks when I use it as to how well organised I am which is far from
the reality.

That's a four-barrelled version of what I had in mind.

Very "serious stuff" indeed! Does it come with a trolley? :-)
