You have two easy ways to cross to the M1. Either use the A57 through
Worksop or take the M62 west, which you will want to take anyway. The

A57 is
mostly single carriageway, and is probably the worse option in your

case.

Wouldn't the A14 be a better bet? Just take the M11 to the A14 and
stick on it until it hits the M1. That way it's virtually motorway
standard all the way and you don't get the nasty bit of the A1 between
Peterborough and Doncaster where you have to stop for roundabouts
every few minutes.

It's a longer way round, and the M1 north from the A14 junction is still
often very congested. There aren't all that many roundabouts on the A1.
Stamford, Colsterworth, Grantham, Markham Moor and the Dukeries, and Blyth
if you go on to Doncaster. Most of them you sail straight through. I find it
a nice relaxing drive. Some decent pubs for lunch. Little Chefs and the like
for a coffee or tea and a toasted tea-cake.
