What are the relative loading/unloading times for Paris double-deck vs
single-deck RER services?
Having taken Eurostar (only one door per coach) and TGV duplex (most of the
luggage space upstairs) which were packed with people with suitcases, it
really brings home the excess dwell times compared with even an HST.
AIUI they tried double deckers to fix their capacity problems on the Munich
S-bahn. And for short stops in town use, they don't work
People wont go upstairs to sit down for two stops, they just stand in the
lobby making the train full when it isn't really.
Given the TGV duplex layout (two steps down from the door into the lobby,
then the lower deck is flat) you could have the standing area downstairs and
the seats upstairs. Even better if there was some kind of indicator to say
how many seats are free.
