That was quick! The first 387/2 unit destined for Gatwick Express is now
on static test at Derby:

Static testing of the first of the Class 387/2 Electrostar electric
multiple-unit cars ordered for Gatwick Express services has begun at
Bombardier Transportation’s Derby plant.

The 27 four-car Class 387/2 EMUs are scheduled to enter service between
London Victoria station and Gatwick airport in 2016,

Starting in June 2015, and completed by the end of the year, according to
the franchisee. Oh dear.

Is *everything* to do with the railways a year late nowadays?

It's not late at all, is it? The order was only signed last November.

Presumably there will be more testing on the Brighton line before they go
into passenger service; and there will need to be quite a few produced
before they are deployed on the GatEx service. I assume they'll be running
as eight and 12 car trains?
