This used to be a trivial matter of asking at a ticket office and

Now that ticket offices are closing, how is it supposed to work?

Google on your phone.

And the backup for when the battery dies or there is no coverage?

Keeping a phone charged is just requires a little foresight and management.
The application I linked to is a functional map in airplane mode, so no
coverage required.

Also,
phone screens are much smaller than the pocket map

thankfully - you don't have to faff with unfolding bits of paper in a
crowded place. You probably need two hands to deal with a paper map, which
can be challenging if you're standing on a crowded moving train, whilst with
a phone you just scroll around the bit of map you need with a thumb, single
handed.
