No you don't. However you will only have very limited access to
journey info and won't be able to complete "incomplete journeys" on
line. I think there are genuine benefits from having cards registered
on a TfL account.

There is only daily and weekly capping at present. There are no
monthly (or longer period) caps.

The problem with monthly caps is that it's almost certainly going to be
based on a defined month of 1st-31st, which isn't going to suit the vast
majority of people
