Both Luton and Gatwick are miles out of London with arguably dodgy rail and

Dunno about Luton, but Gatwick has a very good train service. At least
when Southern aren't playing silly buggers. Just this hour as I write
this, there are trains to London scheduled at ...

12:07, 10, 15, 26, 30, 33, 37, 38, 40, 45, 52, 53, 56

The journey takes about 30 minutes to Victoria or London Bridge, 55
minutes to St Pancras. Even at Ridiculous O'Clock in the morning there
are three trains an hour

And I've always found the M23 to Just Work.
