Is it possible to obtain boundary zone tickets in advance via the web?
If so, how? (Strangely, telling thetrainline.com that I wanted to
depart from 'boundary zone 5' didn't seem to work! ;-)

Unfortunately not. To get an extension, you have to physically go to a
Ticket Office and buy it. You can, however, do so up to 364 days in
advance, if you've got the appropriate Season available.

Not quite 364 days! You can buy most walk-up tickets in advance up to
the expiry date of the current NFM.
