Thanks for that. I had a look at their web site but didn't see
anything straight away. Is a Hybrid car the same as an electric I
wonder?
No, a Hybrid car is a petrol engined car with electric assistance.
You can easily get similar fuel consumption out of a Golf PD Diesel
although
some would prefer the Prius for it's alleged environmental benefits.
Even the most efficient diesel does zero mpg while idling in a
stationary
traffic jam. The prius solves that issue in a nice way. Yes you could
keep
starting and stopping the engine of a normal car everytime you have
to move
but it won't be long before you kill the starter motor and the engine
gets
clogged up with gunk from constantly restarting. With hybrid cars the
engine
is only run in traffic when the battery is too low to adequately move
the car.
For comparison, official figures are
Prius (all 1.5 models) - 65.7 mpg, 104 CO2, £17495
Polo (1.4 TDI) - 62.8 mpg, 120 CO2, £11035
There's a difference but not THAT great a difference, especially when you
factor in the purchase price
