Listing blow to South Kensington Tube plan
By Mira Bar-hillel, Evening Standard Planning Correspondent
8 September 2004
A controversial redevelopment plan has been dealt a body-blow by the
listing of South Kensington Tube station, the Evening Standard can reveal.
Proposals for an 11-storey glass and steel tower and shopping precinct
designed by Sir Terry Farrell were mothballed last year after residents
protested.
Now developers Stanhope and Hutchison Whampoa's hopes of a revised
scheme have been severely damaged after Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell
agreed to list the 1868 station.
It means English Heritage, the Kensington Society and the Chelsea
Society, all of whom objected to the new plans, will be better able to
control the station's future.
