Default Rail link plans get backing

PLANS for the Croxley Rail Link [...]
On Wednesday, Transport For London (TFL) gave the plans its backing, which will
see £10billion spent on projects in London, including £97million on a rail link
from Croxley to Watford Junction.

"But it is a question of funding and political will. There is a lack of any
political clout being used - where are the politicians knocking on ministers'
doors?"

It's been often said by local and county councillors that Hertfordshire
County Council have been very loth to commit resources, and that the
then minister Glenda Jackson deferred commitment on the excuse that
immanent London mayoral elections and new TfL body might result in
different desires on spending, and that Watford's MP Claire Ward has,
since elected, run hot and cold depending on who's listening ...

It is hoped cash for the scheme will come from London Underground,
Hertfordshire County Council and Watford Borough Council, with central
Government stumping up about £70million.

The overall cost of the scheme has more than doubled within three years;
several amounts have been earmarked since 2001 with only London
Underground's (via TfL) promise outstanding.

The plans also include new stations at Ascot Road and Watford West, plus
refurbishment of platforms and stations at Watford High Street and Watford
Junction.

Watford West will have a new direct pedestrian link to the Hospital and
WFC gound; High Street will have a similar link to the eastern end of
the Harlequin Centre; however, remedial / redevelopment plans for both
Hospital & WFC areas and the former Springs site are currently being
drawn up.

TFL will now carry out a public consultation before a final decision on the
plans is made.

:| There're some residents with houses backing on to the Croxley spur
objecting to the plans on the grounds of noise and nuisance ...
