Thats what happened anyway for trains in waterloo and northern,
there were no prototypes.

AIUI there were also new on train equipment systems installed that
they wanted to try out in service. It wasn't simply for
passenger/customer feedback.

Weren't the 1986 prototypes also the first tube trains to use solid
state electronics control systems? A big technological step forward
requiring non-trivial testing on the real system.

Most probably, although I think the one or both of the Experimental Tube
Train (ETT, 73 stock based) units had electronic control. The previous
stock introduced were the 83s.
