Do you need a Zone 1-2 travelcard if you travel on the tube through
zone 1, but never leave the train. E.G. Highbury and Islington to
Camden Town (victoria through kings cross to euston, northern to
Camden Town), or Hammersmith to East Acton via Earls Court, high
street kensington, notting hill gate?

You SHOULD have a travelcard 1 + 2 for the Camden journey via Zone 1.
I don't think there are any interchange barriers at Euston, so I'm
not sure if you actually NEED one.

The barriers you would be using are zone 2 only.

H&I to Camden Road on the North London line would be quicker, even allowing
an average 15m wait for a train.
