Terrorism aside, it's not all that surprising. Hamburg's U- and
S-Bahnen, for example, have *no* staffed stations, except for some
ticket offices which are opened at the start of the month only for
season ticket renewals. There used to be platform dispatch staff, but
these have been replaced by DOO monitors and such.
