It's not really the cost that is the issue, but the percentage of
income after tax that a single journey or a period travelcard
represents: I have no idea where to find a valid comparison between
European cities.


It *is* the cost, income profiles, service standard and availability
and many other factors. A simple comparison of average incomes (be
that mean, median or any other measure) is not considering all the
involved issues. Such a comparison is an emotive tabloid newspaper
tactic, not a rational consideration.
