Default Gatwick back to London - Grrrr

Can anyone explain this one to me: wanted to travel from Gatwick
Airport to West Hampstead Thameslink, in the middle of the afternoon,
and obviously not bothered about the Gatwick Express.

Went to the machine - and with a YP railcard it quoted me a price of
7.55. It wouldn't take my card, so I went to the desk - instead of
giving me that ticket, the guy gave me a Z1-6 travelcard - 7.15!

I only saved a few pence, but I don't understand why the fare just to
that station should be more expensive than the travelcard. Why would
anyone ever want to buy one?

I suspect that the answer is that it combines a CDR to Coulsdon South
with a Z1-6 Travelcard, and that is cheaper than the single to
stations north of City Thameslink.
