As long as security and air traffic control are up to scratch, it's not
asking for anything of the sort!

You think? All it would take is for one terrorist cell who've got hold of a
SAM to fall through the net. Then one weekday morning they park up a some
reasonably anonymous location under the flight path in central london and wait
for the next 747 to lumber past. Then it'll be 400 odd dead from the plane,
god knows how many on the ground and a large crater in oxford street.

They'd actually have a high probability of missing. Terrorists have
tried to shoot down planes in Iraq. Even when one was hit, the pilot was
still able to control it and land it.

Your scenario is theoretically possible but highly unlikely. In reality,
conventional bombs, not involving planes, could do more damage with a
higher probability of success.
