player, a modern TV should be able to play both PAL and
NTSC disks - at least
that's how it seems to work here in NZ.

The same applies here, but only because Region 2 includes
counrtries
using both 625-line PAL (e.g. UK, most of Europe, South
Africa) and 525-line NTSC (Japan). Similarly, Region 4
includes NZ & Australia on 625-line PAL , but also Central
& South America, some of the countries
in which use 525-line NTSC or similar varients (e.g. Brazil
with it's
bizarre 525-line PAL-M). Regions 3 & 5 include similar
mixes, but
Region 1, covering the US & Canada, is NTSC only.

It is possible to buy multi-standard DVD players, VCRs and
TV sets in
the US, but they are very much in the specialist sphere,
and come at a
price premium. Consumers outside of the Region 1 area are
usually a
lot more savvy when in comes to the differences in TV
standards, but
those within - and especially those in the United States -
are pretty
clueless. That not meant as a insult, simply that most
yanks seem
genuinely surpirsed to discover that there is a difference!

What else do you expect of a country that has "world championships" for a
sport that no-one else plays?
