Default Zone extensions with Oyster?

We've already heard horror stories that with PAYG we'll get charged

A lot of the Oyster documentation/the web-site is pretty vague at the
best of times, but I don't think I've seen anything "official" that
even mentions extensions.

Yes - the OysterCard helpline advised me that a PAYG fare will be a
zone 1-6 single. If the journey is less than this, the right fare will
update overnight based upon the zone where the Oyster was scanned upon
exit.

For non-season ticket holders, this is going to involve much checking
- I certainly don't trust LUL of TfL to get the fare values right, and
would verifiy that I have been charged correctly.

Places like Finsbury Park with no barriers will be fun! I assume
scanners will be put in place, but many will be needed.

Cheers,

Jason.
