John Lewis fears delay to trams

CHARLIE MAYFIELD, the chief executive of John Lewis, is calling on Ken
Livingstone, the Mayor of London, and Westminster council to ensure
that a new tram system planned for Oxford Street in the centre of the
capital is ready in time for the Olympic Games in 2012.

Retailers fear that the tram system, the highlight of a £1 billion
facelift of London's premier shopping street, will not be ready until
the following year. The final plans are expected to be revealed in the
next few weeks.

Mr Mayfield, who will open the first stage of a £61 million revamp of
John Lewis's Oxford Street store next week, said: "Over the years
transformation plans have come and gone for the West End. The time is
right for change and we must seize this opportunity."

Not having Oxford Street in pieces during the Olympics seems sensible
but allowing for the inevitable public inquiry etc can it be built in
time?
