Default Annual Oyster validity on National Rail

My local underground station (Holland Park) didn't have the info to

in London my annual Z1-3 Oystercard can be used on?

Sorry to nag but it is important that you separate the card name from
the ticket products. The card is called Oyster. I assume you have a Z13
Travelcard held on the card.

The Travelcard is valid on all NR routes, all LU lines and all of the
DLR within those zones. As long as you have zone 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or a
combination of those on your travelcard you can use Tramlink. As your
ticket includes zone 3 you can use all of the network.

Is it also true that I can use any bus service in greater London,
despite only being able to go as far as Z3 on the tube?

Yes - you can use any *TfL* bus service including those that run beyond
the Greater London boundary such as the 20 to Debden or the 298 to
Potters Bar or the 465 to Dorking.

Full list is given here.

Note that there are a few non TfL routes where your ticket runs to the
boundary and not over the whole route - examples include the 84, 614,
370, 373 and 402.

If I wanted to go to a station in Zone 4, do I have to buy a single
zone extension prior to travel? How much does that cost, e.g. Z3 to
Z4, or Z2 to Z3?

You need to define what sort of station it is. If it is a NR station
that is not the PAYG network then you MUST buy an extension ticket
either at the start of your journey if starting on NR or at the
interchange point onto the NR network.

If you are travelling to a LU station in zone 4 then the gate at the end
of the journey will deduct the fare from your PAYG money on your card.
Note it will do this even if you have no money on the card as every
public Oyster card has PAYG capability on it. You will therefore have
negative value on your card and if you were to try to return from your
Z4 LU station you would not be allowed in until you topped up your
value. It is always a good idea to hold some cash value in your PAYG
"purse" on the Oyster card if you are likely to make extension trips
beyond your normal zonal availability.

You only pay for the extra zones so in your case it would be Z4 only
which is £1 on PAYG or £3 cash if for some reason you went to the ticket
window to buy a LU extension ticket. If you have an Oyster card with a
travelcard on it there is really no point at all in not using the auto
extension facility using PAYG on your card. It is one of the neatest and
convenient features of the system IMO and gives you access to discounted
fares and saves queuing at windows or risking a penalty fare. Just
remember to touch in and out.
