London transport (note lower case 't') fares are obscene.

Obscenely low that is. A friend of mine went from Kew Gardens to
Kings Cross at the weekend. He got an Oystercard from the Ticket stop
outside the station, paid a £3 deposit and took it back to the
ticket office upon arrival at his destination. The fare? £2, for a
journey of over 40 mins, several miles on a high-quality mode of
transport. That's less than the bus fare (£2.10) from my house to the
City Centre, a shorter distance, on a poor-standard mode of transport.
Although admittedly a Season ticket for Bristol Buses is cheaper
than a London Travelcard, though you've got to take into account what
you can do and where you can go with a London Travelcard (ie: More
compared to a Bristol Bus Pass)

Indeed, try the outrageous bus fares in Cambridge! Though the traffic can
be so bad that journeys across the city do take over 40 minutes. :-)

Stagecoach have an effective monopoly.
