Without repeating the arguments about the neccessity of the North Woolwich
closure, is there any practical reason why the line couldn't have remained
in use for the last 6 months?

At a guess because of:

"A separate £39m contract comprising the extension's enabling works,
which included track alignment and the construction of the foundations
and shell of the Docklands Light Railway Stratford International
station, was similarly awarded to a Skanska and GrantRail joint
venture in January 2007."

In other words, the contractors have been doing preliminary work on
the old NLL line since it closed, and have now been awarded the main
building phase as well.
