The Institution of Civil Engineering in its July mag is citing a
near- certain and massive cost over-run if Crossrail is
attempted while the Olympics is being delivered.

... which is probably why serious construction work is likely to
be delayed till after the Olympics

How long will the tunnelling take until if they only start in
2012/13? My recollection of the Victoria and Jubilee Lines is that
tunnelling is quite a long term job.

I think tunneling is much faster these days, but the most
complicated element will be (re-)building the huge central London
stations. Each is linked to at least two existing lines and will
have numerous entrances, escalators and lifts. It will all be
hugely disuptive, not least because the stations are all in
built-up, expensive bits of London.

I'll believe it when I see it. I'll have plenty of time to watch as I
expect to be retired by then.

In my case, I'd say it comes into the 'not in my lifetime' category.
