I've driven back from London Stansted on a Sunday night a few times
recently, only to be informed by the overhead signs that the Blackwall
Tunnel is closed. Why does this tend to happen on Sunday nights?

"they" have noted your movements
"they" see you coming
"they" close the tunnel

As part of Transport for London's (TfL's) commitment to improve
conditions on the London road network, TfL is currently carrying out a
£15.5 million refurbishment to extend the life of the southbound
Blackwall tunnel by 30 years.

Since April 2003 Transport for London has been closing the southbound
Blackwall tunnel completely on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights when
this work is carried out.

This has improved working conditions in the tunnel and reduced the
overall delay to tunnel users.

As a result of this trial, TfL has decided to continue with night time
weekend closures of the southbound tunnel until the planned completion of
the work in 2004.

Southbound single lane closures
Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00pm to 6:00am the following
morning.

Southbound full tunnel closures
Fridays and Saturdays 9:00pm to 8:00am the following morning
Sundays 9:00pm to 6:00am the following morning.

Why don't they put north- and south-bound traffic through the same
tunnel as has been done in the past? Any ideas?
