Hi all,
The rumour mill says that the new surface stock should
be ready to replace the A, C and D stocks in 2013,
and that it will also be used on South London Metro services.
You can't have a 4th rail train running over 3rd rail lines
because the centre shoe will
foul points without a ramp to lift it over
Shoes are sometimes (always?) retractable. ISTR Eurostars have to retract
their shoes in France or they would lose them.
Also you need lots of doors on stock on the circle line
because of the number of crowds but on the met and on
south london mainline services passengers won't be
happy standing for hours because of the lack seats.
I heard some time ago that the stock would have short articulated carriages
of three types: with cab, cabless standing and cabless seated. Every train
would have two cabs and both types of cabless segment, but the proportion of
the types of cabless segment would vary between different lines.
