Looks like the future options for crossrail are growing by the minute
Still pretty pathetic compared to the airport I've most recently used,
Zurich's. They diverted a main line under the airport so you get a
wide range of train and destination options.
Yes, several European airports have main lines passing through/under
them (eg, Amsterdam, Cologne, Frankfurt, Paris, even Gatwick). I don't
know if that was ever considered for LHR, but the use of diesel traction
on the adjacent main line wouldn't have helped.
