Apparently it's to prevent pedestrians panicking half-way acress the
road if the ped light changes from a green man to a red man!!
Ridiculous given that if you approach crossings from certain angles
you now often can't even see a light...


Near where I (used to) work, there's a road that has them.

It's also laid out as a zig-zag, so that as you cross each part of the road
you have to walk along an "internal" kerb to get to the crossing for the
next part.

As the road has left/right filters there are six separate crossings and on
each crossing point they have placed the light so that you cannot see it
until you get there.

Morons.
