Another Tube strike announced

Several University engineering departments now wish to commission a
fully funded study - to be carried out by experts rather than unpaid
volunteers. Their concern is that their first year undergraduates need
expensive remedial maths teaching to bring them up to an acceptable
standard in order to continue with a degree course.
Another possibility is that the universities are behind the times with
the syllabus. My lecturers moaned that we all knew very little about
three dimensional geometry, and refused to teach it to us as we "should
have done it at school". They then tried to teach third year undergrads
the sort of stats that we had all done at GCSE level...
