Default 1915 plan to rename German road names in London

In article ,
says...

I found this interesting... yeah it's old news, but I don't recall anyone
posting any messages here at the time.

Thanks for that.

In the early 40's my grandparents lived in Camberwell, and when we
walked to Rye Lane we went along Highshore Road, the street signs for
which were marked 'formerly Hanover Street'

I was told the name had been changed as 'people didn't like the old name
because of the Germans'

However in later life I found it was renamed in 1937 presumably to avoid
confusion with Hanover Park [we never used the streets the other side of
Rye Lane so didn't know there was such a place]

They told us about shops with German names having their premises renamed
or damaged

Never found out why Schweppes drinks were OK though
