Unfortunately that's the case with much audio-visual material on the BBC
website - AIUI, copyright isn't cleared for use outside the UK.

I'm amused by the "No Smoking" sign on the window... who's going to stop

Copyright *might not* be cleared outside the UK, so just in case they
ban it all. And of course it's also nothing to do with keeping the
bandwidth source/sinks inside the UK.

ps there's an earlier video here (mixture of actual film and
simulation):

I expect that each car, pod (or call it what you will) will be
equipped with a smoke alarm.

Or possibly with an automatic sprinkler :)

This system is just a gimmick for the airport to brag about. Once the
maintenance costs start to spiral because its such a niche product it'll soon
go the same was as the birmingham maglev. The same service could have been
provided by a £25K minibus.

No doubt about that.

I think the poor ride quality will result in many complaints.

I can think of a few in uk.railway that won't be able to cope with the seats
not lining up with the windows. Will there be onboard catering at all?

Also not being able to reserve seats that face forward or back.

Only if BAA allow burger vans in the car parks.

Unlikely. :-(

I understand from information associated with the link that it is due to
enter regular service in Spring 2010. But is there a more specific date,
I wonder?

I can imagine months of trials, with glitches coming to light,
followed by abandonment and replacement with minibuses. It is
probably just a gimmick that will soon be forgotten.

The frightening thing is, BAA intends to use this system to access the
central area (T1,2,3) with the bugs whizzing past each other at two
levels in the taxi tunnel, which will be converted for the purpose
with an intermediate deck! Pie in the sky.

I can easily see "glitches" coming to late and "safety" issues arising,
to say nothing of what is going to happen on the first days of service.

I do hope that they can eventually get something going, though I imagine
that a wait-and-see approach would be the best thing at this moment.

There has been a testing programme going on off-site for the last
couple of years.

But if you were going to apply a virtually untried technology to its
first, full scale practical application, I think Heathrow Airport is
the last place on earth you should choose,

The Olympics of course.

About the only place you get a higher profile failure.

No point looking stupid unless you do it globally.

Surely everyone is so used to things there being broken, they'd hardly
notice if it failed?
